Laser was born "Jim Kalafat" to his Montana parents. He would eventually graduate from Montana State with a degree in Physical Education and Health. A true "montana man", Jim loves hiking, fishing, and camping, among other things. Also while at MSU, Jim was honored with All-American status at the linebacker position for the Bobcats. Jim would later play professional football, on short stints with the Kansas City Chiefs and LA Rams.

He would be named Mr. Montana in 1986, paving the way for Laser in just four more short years. He then changed his name from Jim Kalafat to Jim Starr, and was hired to become one of the new American Gladiators in 1990. Laser would join the other new male gladiator, David T. Nelson (aka Titan), along with veterans Gemini and Nitro to form that 1990 team. Jim would outlast all of them, lasting to the final season in 1996.

Laser was strong in all aspects in Gladiator Arena-- from his skills in various events, to his leadership capabilites. Deemed 'gladiator captain', Laser was the perfect choice for the role. Also, he dominated in many events, including the Wall, Gauntlet and Pyramid. Jim would polish his skills at defending the Pyramid so much, that in Season Seven he bolstered an undefeated record for much of the series. In addition, a contender was very unlucky if they drew Laser in the Wall during the early seasons.
