Interview with Trainer Terry Rosenthal

AG Domain: Hey Terry. First off, tell me what a day in the life of trainer Terry Rosenthal was like on an American Gladiator taping date?

Terry Rosenthal: A day for me would begin at about 8:00am arriving at the CBS studios in Studio City. Myself and Head Athletic Trainer Chris Mumaw would prepare the training room to work on the contenders and gladiators. At about 9:00am, the contenders and gladiators would arrive, we would tape ankles and anything else that needed it, we would also work on any injuries they may have to get them ready to compete. We would begin filming and we would wait for the athletes to get hurt, and when they did we would take care of them. We would film 2 shows a day so we had 4 male contenders and 4 female contenders to deal with plus 10-12 gladiators. When injuries occurred, we would treat them and then decide if they could continue or if an alternate was needed. Treatment would range from basic first aid, to giving them an ice bag, EMS or Ultrasound, stretching, or sending them on to a physician for care. The day would end and that was it. In between events we would hang out in the training/weight room with the glads. That is a basic overview of what I did for seasons 5-7 and pretty much how it worked in Orlando at the live show.

AGd: Which gladiator did you enjoy watching the most?

Trainer: I enjoyed watching Galen (Turbo). He was such a great athlete with an unmatched intensity, he was good at every event and he hated to lose.

AGd: Which gladiator did you know the best?

Trainer: I knew Lee (Hawk) the best. His first year was my first year, we actually lived together in Orlando for the live show and he was in my wedding. He is still one of my best friends.

AGd: Who was your favorite contender?

Trainer: I saw so many contenders come and go, but I would have to break it down to favorite male being Pat Csizmazia. Not the greatest all around athlete, but he got it done and he won it all, we also worked together on ESPN's Survival of the Fittest which he also won. Favorite female- Bernie Wooster. Did not win it all, but was a fun person to work with. Favorite Celebrity or Special Show Contender would be Debbie Dunning from Home Improvement. Very sweet and down to earth and a very good athlete.

AGd: How did you get the job as trainer?

Trainer: They called around to local universities looking for an athletic trainer to replace the current staff following season four. They called Cal-State Fullerton and I had just finished school there. They hired Chris Mumaw, the Assistant Athletic Trainer at Fullerton as the Head Trainer and he brought me in as his assistant. When the live show went to Orlando, Chris did not want to leave his position so the gladiators asked for me and I accepted.

AGd: What was the worst injury you faced?

Trainer: The injuries where so numerous, we got very fortunate that we never had a spinal injury or anything life threatening, so the worst we saw where ACL tears. In the live show we did have an amateur in a joust contest the suffered a fractured/dislocated ankle that was pretty bad.

AGd: Which event (if any), pumped out the most contender/gladiator injuries?

Trainer: Without a doubt Powerball was the game for injuries. The gladiators used to come in and look at the schedule and love a day with no Powerball. After we finished a round of Powerball we all breathed a sigh of relief if we had no injuries.

AGd: What are you doing now?

Trainer: I am currently the Director of Sports Medicine for a large Orthopedic Group in East Alabama.
