AG Domain: What was your favorite event on American Gladiators?
Raye Hollitt: I enjoyed the Joust, because it was my best event and pretty much never got taken off the pedestal.
AGd: Which season was your favorite to compete in?
Zap: The third season was the best for me, as I knew I was getting better and more experienced in the games, and that my job wasn't at stake.
AGd: What was it like going from a gladiator to competing in the events while being a contender?
Zap: It's what I had wanted, besides being the host. I wanted to know what it felt like on the other side, although I did have an advantage because of the experience I had. The disadvantage was actually doing each and every event without someone coming in and substituting.
AGd: I have to ask this for the Turbo's Angels fan club, Who was hotter, Turbo or Laser?
Zap: How can you ask a question like that? They both have their own manly qualities... both are sweet and genuine.
AGd: Do you enjoy watching yourself kicking butt on television?
Zap: Yes, but not being mean about it. I think that was one of my qualities that I was always a true sportsman/sportswoman and cared if someone got injured or was scared.
AGd: How did you get the job as being gladiator?
Zap: At the inception of the show, I auditioned for a character by the name of "Zap" who struck like lightning, got in, caused alot of damage and got out quick. They stopped audition for characters after that first year.
AGd: If you could do it all over, what would you have done differently?
Zap: Kept my opinions to myself. Gone with the EBB and the flow of the show, and not been such a pain in the butt the last couple of seasons. (Actually.. I don't have any regrets, really)
AGd: What kind of fame has AG brought you?
Zap: Now I can get into all of those really cool parties. I don't wait in any more lines and I can go to the Playboy Mansion to boot.
AGd: Did Sunny really get injured by severly twisting her knee in the conquer ring?
Zap: Yes!! It was a real shame that they didn't test that game before she busted out her knee.
AGd: Did you ever consider quitting the show before you actually did?
Zap: I did. Playboy offered me a 6 page pictorial in 96'. That's when I had enough. Funny too, They went off the air the year after I did my stint as a contender against Dallas. I knew it was done!
AGd: What male gladiator did you get to know/like the best?
Zap: They were all awesome. It's hard to pick one out of so many years. If I had to pick one I'd say Laser. He was always very supportive athletically and we had a blast on the tour.
AGd: What female gladiator did you get to know/like the best?
Zap: Ice came in and took my place for a season while I was out having my baby girl (Who is now twelve). But, Lori is the only one I keep in touch with these days.
AGd: What was your favorite part of the tour?
Zap: Travelling cross country on that tour bus being treated like a superstar, playing Madison Square Garden, way too many memories to even start, it was incredible.
AGd: What events did you think were the easiest?
Zap: I forget what they called the tennis ball event [Assault], but that was by far the easiest because for us there wasn't any physical contact where you were worried whether you were going to get hurt or not. Until I did the last season as a contestant against Dallas, I had to be the person that was running from being hit. I got hit right in the chest after the third station. It hurt!
AGd: What events did you think were the hardest?
Zap: The Joust by far. It was my best event because I hated being on that pedestal on a two foot platform fifteen feet in the air. I think that was my best event because I didn't want to get knocked off and that is the only game that they kept where I could actually have the experience after so many years and became really comfortable in being up there, I just didn't want to hurt anybody!
AGd: If AG was re-incarnated, would you be a gladiator? If so, would your name still be Zap?
Zap: I would have to see where I am at in my life. With the whole Viking Production in process and my health to be considered, I'd have to give it some thought. I think hosting it would be more attractive than actually competing. I'm sporting injuries from those six years.
AGd: Relating to the last question, if you could have a say on one thing in a new version of AG, what would it be and why?
Zap: I had been on the show since the inception and had way too many experiences, but they kept changing producers, directors, etc. (That's just Hollywood). They should have kept with a cast (Sort of speaking) with people or characters (If you will), that kept their positions, jobs, and appeal where fans had favorites. I think that is why I did so well, there were way too many comes and goes over the years, everyone was always vying for their jobs. Why I had a 6+ year run and other couldn't remain, I don't know, that's an answer for the production company to ask. The show was and could have been an even bigger hit.
